The data in Table 8.11 show the number of days absent from work for 15 employees of a company in the past six months.

Calculate the mean, median, mode, range, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and interquartile range for this data.

Solution: The computer results for this example are given in Table 8.12a. These results are obtained using MINITAB or Excel computer software. Note: One of the measures, TrMean (or the trimmed mean) is calculated by MINITAB while calculating the descriptive statistics. This is calculated when extreme values are present in the data. It is calculated by deleting the smallest and the largest value from the data set. MINITAB calculates a 5 percent trimmed mean. This is calculated by removing the smallest 5 percent and the largest 5 percent of the values from the data set. SE Mean stands for standard error of the mean. We will explain this in more detail later.
